Leading Sydney jockey Corey Brown is looking to make up for lost time when he gets back to Group One racing at Randwick on Saturday.

Brown is on 2009 Epsom favourite Rangirangdoo and was named as the rider for 2009 Metropolitan Handicap first elect Speed Gifted following Lee Freedman’s decision not to run the imported galloper in Melbourne.

Brown missed several meetings when he served most of a suspension for a breach of the whip rules which would not have attracted a penalty under the new system introduced last week.

After appealing the ban last Tuesday, Brown had the penalty shaved to allow him to ride at Saturday’s 2009 George Main Stakes meeting.

He picked up five rides but because of the uncertainty surrounding the appeal did not have a mount in the feature and also missed out on a Group One win aboard Danleigh in the 2009 Manikato Stakes on Friday night.

“It was hard, when you miss out because of a careless riding suspension you can cop that,” Brown said.

“This was a bit different and missing the ride on Danleigh was a blow.

“But worse things have happened and I’ll be back with some good rides on Saturday in the Group Ones.”

Epsom day 2003 was the scene of Brown’s greatest day at the track when he rode the winners of the three Group One races on the program – Clangalang (Epsom), Unearthly (Flight) and Niello (Spring Champion Stakes).

The Metropolitan has been moved from Monday to Saturday making a clean sweep somewhat harder but Brown is ever the optimist.

“The day I rode the three Group Ones I won four races on the program,” he said.

“I rode a Listed winner as well, Zanna in the Angst, so who knows, maybe I can do it again.”

Brown will also ride leading fancy Melito in the Flight Stakes (1600m).

The Gerald Ryan-trained Melito finished a close second in the Silver Shadow Stakes, won the Furious Stakes and was runner-up to nominal Flight Stakes favourite More Joyous in the Tea Rose last Saturday week.

With Brown opting to take the mount on Speed Gifted, Chris Munce will be aboard the Chris Waller-trained Enzedex Eagle in the staying feature.
