With an extensive network of regional country racecourses, feeding the more elite city races, horse racing in Victoria has over time, captured a piece of the nations heart. On the first Tuesday of every year, the Flemington Turf Club hosts ‘The Race That Stops a Nation’ The Melbourne Cup, run over 3200 metres (2 miles). Also Synonumus with racing in Melbourne are names like Phar Lap, Makybe Diva, Cummings and Freedman, names that have shaped the landscape of Australian horse racing over generations. Along with the Cup, Victorian horse racing also boasts many prestigious Group One races including The Derby, The Oaks, and perhaps most racing purists favourite The Moonee Valley Cox Plate.
