Profound Beauty Melbourne Cup 2009

Trainer Dermot Weld is contemplating another crack at the Melbourne Cup in November with Profound Beauty.

Profound Beauty will target the Irish St Leger next start she maintained her unbeaten record for the season with a stylish win in the Group Three Ballyroan Stakes at Leopardstown on Thursday.

The five-year-old finished fifth in the 2008 Melbourne Cup at Flemington last year.

Sent out 6-4 second favourite, Profound Beauty’s only serious challenger was 11-8 favourite Mourayan but jockey Pat Smullen was always confident as he pushed out the length-and-a-quarter winner.

Betting agency Stan James made Profound Beauty their 14-1 equal favourite for the Melbourne Cup 2009 immediately after her win.

“That was a very impressive performance. She was fit and well today and the race panned out well for her too,” Weld said.

“I’m sure the second horse will improve and he may not have been at his peak today.

“The Melbourne Cup is a possibility. It’s a handicap, so a lot will depend on what handicap mark shell get but shell go for the Irish St Leger next.

“She’s a filly and I’ll try and win as much as I can with her, and well see what way she is at that time of the year.”

John Oxx was delighted with the effort from Mourayan.

“He ran a very good race and the winner is a good filly,” he said.

“That ground was plenty fast enough for him as ideally he wants an ease and he’d appreciate a longer trip. The plan is still the same [to run in the St Leger].”
