Saturday May 14th 2011 – BTC Cup day at Doomben in Brisbane.
And what a day it was!
The day Black Caviar came to Brisbane and won her 13th straight, and racing at Doomben roared back to life!
It was a day where comparisons were made to champions of yesteryear, and old-timers reminisced about the days old. It was great to see the grandstands heaving again, as the racing public cheered and supported the champion mare.
Full credit goes to the BRC for organising and executing such a successful day!
Peter Moody told them what he was going to do, and they were powerless to stop her, as it played out just as he said. Black Caviar ridden by Luke Nolan, stalked Hay List, peeling out 3 wide at the 400m ensuring a clear run to the line. “Luke played the percentages,” Moody said. “He could have stayed behind Hay List but he took any risk out of it by going around Buffering.”
“Hay List is a monster. He was always going to beat off Buffering pretty quickly. Luke just had to make sure Buffering didn’t get in his way.”
As Black Caviar entered the track from the mounting yard, Luke first turned right and took her 150m along the fence in front of the adoring crowd. It was heart warming to witness how people have really embraced Black Caviar, and the buzz she creates because people know they are witnessing something very, very special.
Black Caviar beat hay List by 2 lengths, with Buffering another 3.8 lengths away in 3rd. She ran 1:08.85 with her final 600m in 0:32.87, on a dead track. No Mean feat. After 13 straight wins she has now won a total of $3,474,050 prize money.
Needless to say the 2011 Doomben 10,000 in a fortnights time, will be something not to be missed, a ‘once in a lifetime’ event. Will Black caviar go onto compete in the 2011 Stradbroke Handicap as well? We can only hope!
