Without doubt Australia’s number one venue for thoroughbred horse racing, Flemington Racecourse truly is the epicentre of horse racing in Australia. Flemington hosts some of Australia’s greatest races, and of course the greatest race of them all, the Melbourne Cup.
Affectionately referred to as “Headquarters’, Flemington has a maximum capacity of well over 120,000 people, which of course peaks during Melbourne Cup week during the Melbourne Spring Carnival. A long sweeping track, with a 2300m circumference and a 450m straight, Flemington is seen by most as a fair track, where every horse is given it’s chance to win. One of the great features of the Flemington races is its 1200m straight race, referred to as ‘the Straight Six’, which takes place from a chute starting at the 450m mark.
The home of the Victoria Racing Club (VRC), Flemington is situated only 8km from the Melbourne CBD, at 448 Epsom Road, Flemington Victoria.
Throughout the year there is a total of 29 group races run at Flemington, but it’s always the first Tuesday in November every year, that excitement levels reach fever pitch.
