Sandown Races

Sandown Racetrack

With a new MRC sponsorship deal under its belt, it’s worth mentioning that Sandown is now known as “Sportingbet Park”. The Sandown racetrack which was opened in 1965, is located about 30 minutes drive from the Melbourne CBD, and is one of four metropolitan racetracks in Melbourne. Much like the Morphettville racecourse in Adelaide, Sandown consists of 2 tracks, the Sandown ‘Hillside’ races and the Sandown ‘Lakeside’ races.

Sandown has mostly midweek races throughout the year (much like Moonee Valley), playing somewhat of a support role to racing at Flemington and Caulfield. Sportingbet Park does have its own Sandown Racing Carnival, when they host 4 group races, a day that marks the end of Spring Carnival in Melbourne. This year the newly renamed “Zipping Classic Raceday” (formerly the ‘Sandown Classic’) will be on Saturday the 16th of November 2014 – further information on this years carnival and those races will be posted here closer to the date.
